What Is Longevity?

Longevity ? Those of us alive will be the longest-lived generation in history. Lengthy and productive lives are not privilege of our great-grand-children, but the probable destiny of most of us. People everywhere desire to live long, productive, happy and healthy lives, hence the word “longevity” has several meanings. “Longevity” is sometimes used as a synonym for “life expectancy” in demography. In additional to  longevity is defined as the capability to survive past the average age of death (De Benedictis and Franceschi, 2006).

However, the term longevity is sometimes meant to refer only to especially long-lived members of a population, whereas life expectancy is always defined statistically as the average number of years remaining at a given age. So the meaning of the term ‘longevity’ means long life, endurance and prolonged existence. The swelling of the population of people aged 100 years and above has provided researchers with an opportunity to offer responses to one of the most fundamental questions about human health and longevity. The main questions that come into being for the secrets of longevity are what does it take to live a long life? How much do diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors matter compared with good ‘genes’? and one of the most crucial questions is what is the quality of life amongst the elderly population?

Today’s science of human biology concludes that, in optimal climatic-geographical, social, economic, hygienic-dietary and other similar circumstances, the life span should be an average of 100 years. Preventive medicine instructs us to adhere to the so-called healthy habits and taking responsibility for personal health, because until people themselves understand and accept as their own “lifestyle” life according to the “Gods”, that is by natural laws, doctors cannot change anything about their health and the length of their lives.

There are many secrets of longevity and some of them are mentioned as follows:

  • When a person is doing any sort of work which is time consuming, he or she must take breaks in between especially this is required of an older person who is above 80 years of age; working for hours at a stretch should be avoided in old age.
  • At the old age, a person is required to remain ambulatory and in order to implement this function, it is mandatory for a person to be active such as getting involved in some sports, gardening, preparing meals, painting, and making use of fewer labor saving devices.
  • It is essential to create a healthy social network, communicating with people around, making friends and so forth. Absence of a social network may be detrimental and lead to severe loneliness which may even shorten the life span of an individual. Loneliness is disadvantageous for people of all ages, but for senior citizens it may lead to depression and melancholy, hence it is vital for them to create a social network to avoid this problem.

Longevity and endurance are the factors that every individual wants to achieve and in order to attain a prolonged existence, it is essential to take number of factors under consideration; one has to adopt every means and sources to keep oneself healthy and wholehearted in every possible manner.
